The journey to manufacture eco-friendly sustainable products began in 2009 when we were presented with a challenge to help a customer attain the highly coveted MBDC C2C certification. We soon learned that sustainability was not a goal but a process, and we became fascinated with the thought that we could manufacture wire and cable products in a responsible and environmentally conscious way.
Under the guidance of McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry (MBDC), we first set out to find a phthalate-free insulation compound that met their rigorous criteria of recyclable and non halogen yet still flame retardant. The biggest challenge was finding a way to avoid using PVC, which is considered by environmentalists to be “The Poison Plastic.” With 90% of wire and cable being PVC-based products, this was no simple task.
Our research included studying global trends and initiatives. We looked to Europe as the global leader in environmental directives and chemical restrictions and found new and innovative resins that were being introduced. It is through the evaluation and success of these compounds that led us to the introduction of our Enviro-Wire product line.
Along the way we have invested heavily in additional UL approvals and updating our extrusion equipment to effectively process these difficult and challenging compounds.
Since 2009 we have found many companies that share our commitment to sustainable manufacturing and we have shipped millions of feet of Enviro-Wire™. We continue to research and frequently add new products to our offering as new industry segments look for solutions.
The highlight of our journey came on July 1, 2013 when Hueson Wire was awarded C2C Silver Certification by MDBC. As the first wire and cable manufacturer in the world to achieve this prestigious certification we stand proud of our accomplishments. In June of 2014, we renewed our C2C Silver Certification as we successfully passed our annual follow-up audit.
