Hueson Cable: ‘green’ was epoch challenge<\/h2>\n

Some four years ago, Hueson Corp., a small wire and\u00a0cable manufacturer in Northbridge, Massachusetts, USA,\u00a0took a \u201cgreen\u201d direction and ended up becoming the first\u00a0wire and cable company in the U.S. certified as such by\u00a0The Cradle to Cradle Certified CM Products Program(c2certified.org). Below, Hueson Corp. General Manager\u00a0Brian Hanlon discusses his company\u2019s C2C experience.<\/p>\n

WJI: How did your company come to be, and when\u00a0exactly did it adopt a \u201cgreen\u201d focus?<\/h4>\n

Hanlon:<\/strong> We were founded in\u00a01997 as a local hook-up wire manufacturer\u00a0in Massachusetts. As the\u00a0price of raw materials spiraled\u00a0upwards in the past 10 years, we\u00a0realized we had to re-focus our\u00a0direction and we migrated into a\u00a0low-temp wire and cable job shop\u00a0with an emphasis on custom cables.\u00a0We had always worked with industry\u00a0leaders, which required us to be\u00a0one of the first wire manufacturers\u00a0to go 100% lead free. RoHS, Reach\u00a0and Prop 65 compliance followed.\u00a0These initiatives were the beginning stages of our transition\u00a0to our Enviro-Wire line.<\/p>\n

WJI: As a small company, how did Hueson Wire handle\u00a0all the R&D needed to offer green products?<\/h4>\n

Hanlon:<\/strong> In many ways, our company size and naivety\u00a0has been the secret of our success. We have always possessed\u00a0the \u201ctribal knowledge\u201d that gives us the ability to\u00a0keep working a product until we got it right. At the same\u00a0time, on this green focus, we always seemed to be too far\u00a0down the path to turn around or give up. The transition\u00a0had its share of challenges along the way. Many of these\u00a0products are heavily filled and required special screw\u00a0designs and tooling. Getting the products through UL\u00a0was an epic tale of trial and error. We are very well\u00a0known in the halls of UL in Melville, New York.<\/p>\n

WJI: When did you first hear of the C2C certification?<\/h4>\n

Hanlon:<\/strong> From a marketing perspective, the biggest\u00a0challenge with \u201cgoing green\u201d was defining what \u201cgreen\u201d\u00a0meant. We knew that we needed a third-party authentication.\u00a0Through our own research and co-op work with a\u00a0local university, we learned about The Cradle to Cradle\u00a0Certification process, which rates products across five\u00a0critical quality categories; social fairness, material health,\u00a0material reutilization, renewable energy and water stewardship.\u00a0Now when a customer asks us how our product\u00a0is \u201cgreen.\u201d we can show our C2C certification and they\u00a0can be confident knowing that our products have been\u00a0broken down and analyzed by chemical composition to\u00a0the .1 percentile. I believe that we are the only cable company\u00a0to have this certification on any level.<\/p>\n

WJI: How long did it take to get the certification?<\/h4>\n

Hanlon:<\/strong> This was a slow and tedious process, but one\u00a0of the advantages of being a small company is that we\u00a0can be very patient, and that\u2019s good because this is not a\u00a0simple field to enter. From the time we first came up with\u00a0the concept, which was prompted by a contact we had\u00a0with a C2C customer, we had to experiment with a lot of\u00a0different blends to find something\u00a0that would meet all the parameters.\u00a0There are three main C2C characteristics\u00a0for a cable: it must be non\u00a0PVC, it must be recyclable and it\u00a0must be halogen-free, and that eliminates\u00a0about 98% of wire and cable\u00a0products in the U.S. It took six to\u00a0eight months before we actually did\u00a0prototypes, and from there it took\u00a0two years to get our first UL\u00a0approvals. We\u2019ve gotten better at it,\u00a0but it still takes a lot of new product\u00a0development, and it usually takes at\u00a0least 12-18 months before products hit the market.<\/p>\n

WJI: What percentage of the products you now offer is\u00a0considered \u201cgreen\u201d? Are you working on new products?<\/h4>\n

Hanlon:<\/strong> C2C products represent less than 40% of our\u00a0overall products. A typical order is about 10,000 ft. We\u00a0produce three primary C2C products: portable cordage,\u00a0multi-conductor cables and single-end hook-up wire. Our\u00a0intent is to continue to roll out new products, and we\u00a0have several projects in the works covering different market\u00a0segments. Green is a process, and there is no finish\u00a0line. Most companies today participate through the elimination\u00a0of lead, phthalates, halogens, Reach and RoHS,\u00a0and increased material declaration requirements are tenfold\u00a0from where they were even a couple of years ago.<\/p>\n

WJI: Are customers willing to pay extra for \u201cgreen\u201d?<\/h4>\n

Hanlon:<\/strong> This is such a small niche market and the\u00a0economies of scale are far from allowing pricing to be\u00a0competitive with traditional products. Most green compounds\u00a0are double or triple the cost of PVC. We often\u00a0compare our product to the organic food market in that\u00a0there is a growing segment of the population that are\u00a0committed to living healthy and sustainable lives and they\u00a0are willing to pay more to participate. These same people\u00a0are also product designers and business owners. On the\u00a0plus side, using C2C as the guiding light, companies are\u00a0slowly recognizing that the world does not have a pollution\u00a0problem, it has a design problem.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
